Sometimes a tree will need to be removed. This can be for a number of reasons such as the interest to conservation, safety to people and property, or if the tree is in an area that affects a planning application or a construction project..
If a tree is in a constricted or small area, then the tree will need to be climbed and dismantled in sections. Some times when there is space, and a clear safety zone then the tree may be felled in the traditional forestry way.

Crown reductions are mostly carried out when a tree has grown too large for space it is growing in.
Crown reductions may be used to assist in reducing weight removing the stress on the branches or the tree as a whole. it can also help to reduce the effects of shading and light loss.
The final result of a crown reduction should retain the shape of the crown, and also a significant proportion of the leaf bearing structure. A crown reduction should leave a similar, outline of the tree, and not necessarily achieve symmetry for the sake of appreance.
The cuts should be as small as possible and generally not exceed 10cm.
Not all Tree species are suitable for this type of works and crown reducing should not be confused with ‘topping’, which is considered poor practice.

Pollarding is a practice in which the main branches of a tree are pruned heavily. This promotes vigorous new regrowth from the stumps and is often carried out in urban areas to reduce the crown size of the street trees, which are commonly deciduous broad-leaved trees. However the tree species must be capable of producing epicormic growth or what is often known as water shoots. Conifers are unsuitable for this type of practice and will not recover.

Oak Processionary Moth (Thaumetopoea processionea, OPM) which is native to southern Europe and was accidentally introduced into the UK in 2005 by the trade of live plants.
